As the only Navy museum dedicated solely to subs, the Submarine Force Museum tells the story of the "silent service" with artifacts, photographs and documents covering submarine history from the TURTLE, built in 1775, to the sleek and stealthy boats of today. The Museum is also the home of Historic Ship NAUTILUS (SSN 571), the world's first nuclear-powered sub and the first ship of any kind to reach the North Pole. NAUTILUS is open for public tours during regular Museum hours; a 20-30 minute recorded narration guides visitors through the ship. (Language options for the recording are English, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish). Ample free parking is available for cars; bus and R/V parking is also available free of charge. In the summer months, food is available at the 90 North Cafe (hours 10 AM - 4 PM). Families and groups may also bring their own food and eat at our outdoor picnic area. * Please note that NAUTILUS and the Museum are closed every Tuesday and for two weeks in both April and November for scheduled maintenance. Check the website for more information and special-program listings.
