Bats & White Nose Syndrome in Eastern Connecticut Cheri Collins, Mammalogist, MNH Staff Saturday, July 31, 2010 7:00 pm. to 9:00 pm. Ashford, CT location Advance registration required: $20 ($15 for Museum members) Adults and children ages 6 and above. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Learn about the unique biology and behavior of bats from Museum staff member and mammalogist Cheri Collins in this visit to an active bat colony. Meet native bat species, examine mounted museum specimens, find out where bats live, and what role they play in our natural environment. Last year there was a precipitous decline in the local bat populations as a result of a new disease, White Nose Syndrome, a fungal infection spread among the hibernating bats during the winter months. During this visit, learn about this threat to all of the bat populations in the northeast, how this colony fared over the winter hibernation, and how many have survived to return again this year. Listen in on bats in the wild with a "bat detector" to hear them use echolocation to sense their surroundings and locate flying insects. Then, watch living bats as they emerge for the evening and fly out to hunt for prey.
