15th Annual Legislative Technology Exposition

Technology Expo at the Legislative Office Building
sponsored by:  CECA - Connecticut Educator's Computer Association
Legislative Office Building
Wednesfay, April 28, 2010
9:00 am. to 1:30 pm.
www.ceca-ct.org

The Connecticut Educator's Computer Association (CECA) is sponsoring the Fifteenth Annual Legislative Technology Exposition.  We are asking school districts from around the state to have small groups of students (a maximum of 4 per group) and their teachers apply to come to the Legislative Office Building to demonstrate to legislators how students use technology to support the learning process.

Groups are needed from all regions of the state and all levels from kinderarten through high school.  We are lloking for projects from all subject matters where technology is used as an integral part of the learning process.  Demonstrations should also show how the incorporation of technology into the curriculum supports the skills tested on the CMT and CAPT and prepares students for future work skills.  All groups must apply.  Only groups that have been pre-selected may participate.

We hope you will notify your legislative representatives if your students are selected and encourage local town officials, Board of Education members, school/business partners and parents to attend.

If you would like to send a group to the Expo, please go to:  http://www.ceca-ct.org for details and to submit an online application.  The deadline is February 26, 2010.  We will notify groups of their participation in March.

Math in the Humanities

Celebrating Fifty ATOMIC Years with Special Programs

(There will be no admission charge charge and refreshments will be served.  Registration is done online at www.atomicmath.org )

On April 28, 2010
at Williams School in New London
from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.
ATOMIC will host "Math in the Hunanities"

an exposition of Dante's use of numerology and geometry in the Devine Comedy presented by Christopher Hammond, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Connecticut College.  Living in the early fourteenth century, Dante Alighieri was unaffected by the modern "division of learning" that seperates the sciences from the arts.  One of the greatest poets of his day, he was also well versed in the rich tradition of classical mathematics.  He drew heavily on mathematical concepts when composing his literary masterpiece; throughout the Devine Comedy, he regularly employed mathematical imagery to specific literary effect.

This talk will consist of a brief overview of the Comedy, followed by an exposition of the poet's use of arithmetic and geometry.  No particular mathematical expertise will be expected of the audience but would be most appropriate for middle and high school students and their families.
